Which WhatsApp template category should you choose?

Choose the category based on the purpose of the message—not merely one word it contains. Mixed transactional and promotional content will generally be treated as Marketing.

CategoryWhat it is forCommon examplesImportant distinction
MarketingPromotions, offers, product discovery, engagement and messages intended to encourage a new purchase or action.Discounts, sales announcements, product launches, abandoned-cart reminders, event invitations, surveys and special offers.A message containing both a transaction update and promotional material is likely to be Marketing. Marketing is also the broad category when the content does not qualify as Utility or Authentication.
UtilityNon-promotional information that follows a specific customer action, request, transaction, account event or existing service.Order confirmations, delivery updates, payment receipts, payment reminders, appointment reminders, booking changes and account alerts. The message should relate to something the customer already did or requested. Adding a coupon, upsell or unrelated offer can cause it to be reclassified as Marketing.
AuthenticationVerifying a user with a one-time password or security code during login, registration or account recovery.OTP codes, login verification, account verification and password-recovery codes.OTP and verification-code messages belong under Authentication—not Utility. Meta uses specific Authentication template formats and buttons.
Quick rule: Is it a code used to verify identity? Choose Authentication. Does it follow an existing customer transaction or request without promotion? Choose Utility. Is it promotional, engagement-focused or mixed with an offer? Choose Marketing.

About this tool

This checker reviews common structural and wording issues in WhatsApp Business message templates. It validates the lowercase template name, numbered variables, length, calls to action and signals that may affect category selection.

The readiness score is guidance, not a guarantee of approval. Meta makes the final category and approval decision, and its rules may change.

Processed securely without storage.
Your template is sent securely to the WebWMS2U validation service to produce the report. Template contents are not saved to the database or retained in checker logs.
