Learn what WhatsApp statuses mean and how to troubleshoot pending, sent, delivered, read and failed messages.

Status Meanings

Pending means waiting. Processing means a worker is attempting the send. Sent does not guarantee handset delivery. Delivered and read depend on supported events. Failed means the stored error needs investigation.

Why Pending Happens

The queue worker may not have processed it, a personal device may be offline, credentials may be unavailable, a retry may be scheduled or the workload may be large. Check timestamps before resending.

Cloud API Failures

  • No open service window
  • Template unavailable or paused
  • Wrong template variables
  • Invalid recipient
  • Inaccessible media URL
  • Invalid token or permissions
  • Messaging restrictions

Safe Troubleshooting

  • Find the message ID
  • Check status and timestamps
  • Read safe error details
  • Confirm source and recipient
  • Check the Cloud window or template
  • Check device health
  • Look for scheduled retry
  • Reuse the idempotency key

Avoid Duplicates

Do not resend immediately merely because a message is pending. Webhooks may also repeat, so receivers must deduplicate events and apply updates idempotently.
